Young PR Joins Converseon in NYC
Written on March 26, 2007 – 1:09 pm | by Paull Young

The Young PR World Tour finished for a reason: I’m moving to New York to join Converseon as a Senior Account Executive. Here’s all the info:
- The media release on PR Web
- A post from my new colleague Constantin Basturea
- Some audio - me talking about the new gig
Converseon is a full service social media communications agency founded in 2001 by Rob Key. We aim to help clients join the digital conversation and all my regular readers will know this is a passion of mine. I’ll be executing social media strategies for some great clients under the guidance of Constantin Basturea, our director of social media.
Constantin and Rob embody the key qualities that attracted me to Converseon: A dedication to a strategic approach to PR, a commitment to ethical behavior, a strong belief in innovation and desire to work at the cutting edge of the social media revolution.
I’ll be working from Sydney for the next couple of months before moving to New York for the long haul. If you’ve got any New York advice or connections for a young Aussie bloke 4 parts excited and 1 part nervous about the big move to the Big Apple, please be sure to get in touch!

Congrats…let us know when you’re in NYC full-time.

I would have recommended reading Tom Wolfe’s ‘Bonfire of the Vanities’ but you already have because we’ve chatted about this novel before. And it gives a rather menacing, 1980s version of the city.
I also enjoyed ‘Bright Lights, Big City’ - but I fear I’m stuck in a 1980s groove. How to bring your preparation up to date? Watch HBO’s Sex and the City… You can’t do any better than that as preparation.

Congrats, Paull. The states are lucky to have you. You need to come back down to DC soon!

Congrats Paull! It sounds like a very exciting opportunity (in a very exciting city).

Paul:
Congratulations, mate! If all the accounts to Constantin are true — and I’m sure that they are — you have one hell of a new boss. Hope to be able to meet you in person, finally, once you’ve settled in NYC. I hear there are plenty of cheap buses between New York and Boston

Josh - Not a worry, I anticipate getting over there in May. Thanks for the kind words!
Richard - I read ‘Last Exit to Brooklyn’ on the plane home, tough look at the seedier side of the place.
I’m planning on re-reading Bonfire… but I’m not sure that I can bring myself to stare at Sarah Jessica Parker for too long…
Steve - I’m looking forward to getting there mate! And I bet you can guess what we’ll have for lunch
Scott - great stuff! Geez I’m worried I’ll turn into a real porker on a US diet…
Chris - Cheers mate!
Luke - Thanks for all your support, you’ve been there from the start mate! Looking forward to reading your post - I imagine you’ll make as much fun of me as Davies did…

I am so excited that you are coming! While I am nowhere near NYC, I have a better chance of catching you in Second Life at least :-). Plus, it will be great fun for you working with Constantin - he is one of my social media heroes.

Congrats! Truly one of the biggest social media success stories. You live it like no one else and now I’m happy to see you being rewarded for your efforts.
Now, I just have to take some lessons from you!

Go Paull!!
I go to NYC a HELLUVA lot more often than Australia, so perhaps we’ll finally meet!
I hope you’ll still contribute to Forward!!

Bryper - I have tremendous personal respect for Constantin and I can’t wait to work closely with him. I’m also a big fan of Rob Key - he’s a former Rugby player as well, I like the fact that my boss knows how to tackle me ;-).
No excuses now, I’ll definitely be taking a trip up to Boston!
Kami - thanks! The time zones are going to be a lot more hospitable for my US friendships, that’s for sure.
Kevin - your comment put a smile on my face mate :). There’s only one real lesson to learn - follow your passions with everything you’ve got.
Karel - that’s some crazy mind power! Enjoy the World Cup!
Phil - Cheers mate! We’ll have to cross paths at some point. And don’t worry - nothing will stop me contributing at Forward.

Well done. Good to see your world tour paid dividends (ones that you can put in the bank, as opposed to the goodwill ones, which are also good!).

Eric - You’re on the money there ;-). I was starting to get a little worried as I frittered away my savings bouncing around Europe. Turns out the investment (which wasn’t all that much… just everything I had…) turned out for the best.
Alex - you bet! The biggest darn boxing match since Rocky vs Drago.
John - Thanks for the vote of confidence
Owen - Cheers mate!

Hope to see you in NYC before long, and to finally meet Constantin.
All the best to you. What an exciting adventure you’re on…

Congrats!
Nothing PR related — just some things my partner and I have found useful while maintaining a Melbourne / New York relationship.
* New York is one of the few places in the world where you’re not likely to be asked questions about where you’re from based on your accent. People seem more concerned with what you’re about rather than what you sound like.
* John Tauranac’s Manhattan Block By Block is the most helpful guide we’ve found for getting around town; it’s one of the few guides that lays subway maps on top of street maps. And if you’re online, the Straphangers Maps will perform similar functions.
* If you get homesick, Eight Mile Creek on Mulbery Street is lovely, and has a large ex-pat contingent. I’ve heard that The Sunburnt Cow on Ave. C is also fine, but we haven’t managed to get over there yet.
* You might want to check in on Justine Larbalestier’s blog. Not only is she a very entertaining writer, but she’s also Sydney-sider who has found herself living in New York part time.
Hope you find this useful — and let us know if you need any additional help!

Paull…We Yanks will look forward to having you closer, but one beauty of this social media world is that we’re never far from one another, are we? I’ll be chatting with Luke Armour real soon to see if we can’t get both you and Constantin to take a road trip to the Buckeye state.

Congratulations mate. Clearly this is well deserved.

Congratulations Paull,
Just when we are all talking about how to quantify the ROI of blogging, you go out and demonstrate it.
Well done.

Jackie - It’s always nice being mates with a local :).
Allan - I’ll be in touch. If I get down to your old South Carolina stomping ground I’ll be sure to drop you a line ;-).
Mitch - likewise! I’d love to see Montreal so if I get a chance to get out there I’ll jump at it!
Skye - you’re making me blush, I’m glad to be an inspiration :).
Andrea - that appears to be the case doesn’t it?
Donna - Glad you liked the audio, just wish I had as good a recording set up as you. It helped capture my excitement to some degree. You’re always welcome in NYC!
Randi - Thanks so much for all that advice! Seriously a really helpful comment. I actually had a few beers at Eight Mile Creek when I was in the Big Apple in January. I reckon it could become my local :).
Richard - I am getting old aren’t I?
Dave - It’s a hellofa town! I’m looking forward to becoming a local.
Marc - cheers mate, it’s got to be done.
Bill - I’m sure I’ll be getting out to Ohio soon, Luke Armour’s hospitality is too strong a draw to avoid it!
Steven - cheers mate.
Jason - It’s worked for me. I’m just looking forward to applying all this stuff to my clients.
Bryper - Watch that double L mate!
Rajiv - cheers mate
Fran - thanks for the comment, hopefully you’re right.

You’ve come quite a long way since I’ve known you mate. Congratulations on the appointment. You have really earned it. Australia’s loss is New York’s gain.
All the best. I hope to catch up with you while you are in Sydney.

Paull, you need to frame these comments. Keep them near, so that at times when the work gets challenging, and it will, you know that you have a network who supports and believes in you.

Hi Youngie,
I am not posting to say good luck and congratulations (although I do wish you all the best) and I am not here out of passion for comm. (although I am passionate and enjoy you blog), no, I am here to check out the “what you didn’t know about me (Youngie) page”.
After living with you for a year and sharing a stomping ground for many more, I thought I knew indeed all I wanted to know about Paull Young. However there was a lingering notion to know more -kinda like when there is something gross on TV but you can’t look away… (haha).
So I checked it out, and I must say that I was impressed that I knew you a little better than I thought. I didn’t know about the fanasy fetish or that people are calling you Paul, but I wasn’t suprised you put your hand up a cow’s rear or that you almost changed courses to Journo. The iron-surfboard one always makes me laugh (and then cringe you poor darling!).
I know your in Aust. for a few months so hopefully we will get a chance to catch up.
Monica.

Youngie! Fantastic news mate. The yanks won’t know what’s hit them. Can you get the Dragons on cable over there??
